The NASA M113 rescue vehicle was a modified M113 armored personnel carrier used at Kennedy Space Center for emergency operations during launches. Its tracked mobility and protective aluminum hull allowed rescue personnel to approach spacecraft and launch facilities during hazardous situations involving fire, explosions, or debris. Painted in highly visible emergency markings, NASA’s M113s supported the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. Astronaut crews also received basic M113 driving instruction so they could use the vehicles during an emergency evacuation.
